Gujarati Dal

Well I am from Gujarat and as you all know Gujju add sugar or jiggery in their food but I don't like to add sweet in my dishes, I like spicy food, so even when I am posting dish which require sugar or jiggery in it , I write it but I don't add it in my food. Just to give you perfect recipe I write it.  But this is THE dal which I like it as it is. It is sweet and sour and the more you boiled it , it gives its best taste.  In my house my huby also don't like Guajarati food specially added sweet in it so I don't make this dal often, when he is out of town or he is not going to have diner, I make this for me and kids. so one day I had that chance and I grab it. Dal is very simple , only ingredients goes in tadka or tempering make this dal special.

Ingredients :

1 cup tuver dal (spilt pigeon peas)
2 tsp. raw peanuts
2 seedless dates
1 tomatoes chopped
2 tbsp. grated jaggery
1 tsp. lime juice
1 tsp. ginger grated
2 slit green chilies
1 tsp. turmeric powder
1 tsp. red chili powder
salt to taste
fresh coriander leaves chopped to garnish

Tempering :

2 tsp. oil
1 tsp. each mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds
6-7 curry leaves
2 cloves
1" piece dalchini (cinnamon)
1 bay leaf (tejpatta)
2 dry red chilies
pinch of hing
4 to 5 kokum soaked

Method:

Wash the dal and add 2 cups of water , peanuts and dates and pressure cook for 2-3 whistle.
Open it when its cool and mashed it so there is no whole dal in it. dal has to be liquid consistency.
Heat the big pot , add oil in it.
Add mustard seeds, jeera and when its crackle add fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilies, cloves, cinnamon and bay leaf, hing. Mix well and sauté on medium flame for few seconds.
Add boiled dal with one and 1/2 cups of water, kokum, tomatoes, jaggery, red chili powder, turmeric powder, ginger and green chilies. Mix well.
Bring it to boil and simmer for 10 to 15 on medium to low flame.
Garnish with coriander and lime juice and serve hot with rice.

Serve hot with just plain rice. Perfect for cozy lunch. When its cold, its get thicker, so just add little water and heat up again and it taste better.
