Tofu 65

Tell you the truth, I didn't even had slightest idea what is this all 65 dishes and why it name has number in it, Then I did my research and find out that in 1965 , this dish was introduced by famous Buhari Hotel restaurant in Chennai  by its founder A.M.Buhari, a pioneer in the South Indian food industry , as per wiki. Mainly that time they made it with chicken but later on its other variation also float.  Main spices used to make this were ginger, cayenne peeper, mustard powder, vinegar.

So I was looking at all the dishes made by everyone using tofu, cauliflower, paneer, potatoes, soya and above all I saw it in Sanjeev Kapoor's kitchen khiladi, it made me thinking that it must be something about this dishes that people like it, so one day I made it with Tofu. As you know I am not a big fan of paneer, huby don't like potatoes, I was out of cauliflower, so tofu was handy and much more interested also. so I made it ad surprising we loved it. Its easy as 1-2-3. And in compare to other dishes its fast too.

Ingredients :

4 oz. block of Tofu

Marinade:

1/4 cup AP flour / Maida
2 tbsp. corn flour
1 tsp. Kashmiri red chili powder (so you don't need to use red color)
1 tbsp. soya sauce
1 tsp. chili sauce
1 tsp. ginger garlic paste
salt to taste (you are adding soya sauce so be careful with salt)

Other Ingredients:

1 small onion big chunks
4 garlic thin sliced
1 green chili slice
1/2 green capsicum big chunks
few curry leaves
1 tbsp. oil
salt or soya sauce as per taste

Method:

Cut tofu in your desired shape / size and marinade it with the ingredients mentioned in the marinade.
Leave it aside for good 20-30 minutes.

Heat a oil in pan and add those marinade tofu pieces and fry them nice and brown.
Take it out on paper towel to drain their access oil.
In that oil also fry curry leaves and sprinkle over tofu pieces.

You can eat it as it is with tooth pick. but if you want to add more veggies.
Add oil in pan, Add garlic and chili.
cook for few seconds till you get nice aroma.
Add onion  and capsicum and salt or soya sauce and mix it very well.
Add deep fried tofu pieces in it and heat them thru and take it out on serving dish.
Sprinkle green onions on top and enjoy with your favorite hot sauce or any dipping sauce or just with ketchup too.

  10. Dear Linsy, tofu 65 looks awesome. According to one TV show, I witnessed some months back, Early restaurents menu cards had an list of numbers following the dish name (Not bullet form here) And in the 65th place, there was a plain chicken dish, which was deep fried. So, casually time passed by, people called out this dish along with the number (in order to differentiate from other chicken dish) and hence the name to deep-fried chicken became chicken 65. I don't know If this is right, just thought would share this piece of info with you :)
