Apple and Sprouted Chana Aachar / Apple and Chickpea Pickle

We are so lucky that we have nice neighbor, they have apple tree which gives fruits and its all branches are in our back yard. They have blackberries and they have only roots there, fruits we eat. When we were living in different state, that time also our neighbor had mango tree, I was pregnant that time and one day my husband surprised me with raw mango, you can imagine how did I felt. so we are very lucky in that case. Coming to today's dish, every year I see this apples and think of making pickle and forgot it, This year I make sure I do it. So when I was mowing the lawn, I took some apples and I had some sprouted brown chana also so made this pickle. It is so delicious and tangy. I like to make pickle in small batches so I can eat it fresh.

Ingredients :

5 green apples

2 green chilies cut in rings
1/2 tsp. ginger chopped
1/3 cup sprouted black chana (chickpeas)
salt to taste
3 cloves of garlic chopped
2 tbsp. Pickle masala
2 tbsp. mustard oil (if not then regular oil is fine)

Method:

Wash and Cut apples in small pieces and salt in it so it don't discolor.
In a bowl, mix chilies, ginger, sprouted chana, garlic, pickle masala and mix it.
Strain extra liquid from apples and add them in to mix.

Add oil and mix it very well.
Put it in a jar and let it cook in their juice for one day.
Pickle will be ready to eat next day.

If you find sweet apples you can make sweet pickle out of it.
You can omit ginger and garlic and chilies and just make it with chickpeas and apple only too.

Big Thank you to Manjula to help me put watermarks in pictures.

  11. That's such a fun combination :) I once had a neighbor who grew tomatoes and eggplants in his garden, and he would always drop a basket full of them whenever he could. He was the sweetest!! My other neighbor had an orange tree, and never offered us even one fruit, lol! Nice to have such a neighbor who offers you their harvest :)
